Support GATWU and Garments Mahila Karmikara Munnade
GATWU and ‘Garments Mahila Karmikara Munnade’ are membership based organisations supported by dues paid by garment workers. However, as we build our organisations and work towards increasing the membership base and becoming self-reliant, the organisations need support to carry on and expand our activities.
Full time union organizers
Full time organisers are very important to execute the union’s day to day work, maintain communication with the workers and build new leaders. Rs 10,000 will support a full-time GATWU organiser for an entire month.
Office spaces
The union has two union offices, in Mysore Road and Peenya respectively and the establishment costs, including rent, for each office is around Rs.7000 per month.
News letter
Garments Mahila Karmikara Munnade publishes a Bi-monthly “Suji-Dara” (Needle and Thread) Newsletter that is sold to workers at a nominal cost and has a circulation of 2000 copies and a readership base of approximately 5000 garment workers. The Newsletter has been in circulation since 2005, and is the predominant newsletter for garment workers in the region. Each issue of the Newsletter requires a subsidy of around Rs.5000.
Legal Assistance
While the union gets substantial pro-bono support on various legal struggles and campaigns, it still needs to be able to access funds to carry on with landmark legal struggles, including its struggle for better minimum wages in the sector.

In this context, we request support from all concerned persons and organisations to sustain these important organisations working in a sector where most of the workers are women, on very low wages, and coming from socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society.
